Universities of New Zealand

Universities New Zealand - Te Pōkai Tara is the representative body for New Zealand’s eight universities and is responsible for the approval of university programmes, administers a range of scholarships and represents the universities in the public interest, both nationally and internationally. The eight universities in New Zealand teach approximately 180,000 students (part and full-time) and employ around 20,000 staff.

AUCKLAND UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY(AUT)

Auckland University of Technology is a university for the changing world, an increasingly powerful force for learning and discovery. A contemporary, connected and relevant study destination, it has differentiated itself through its commitment to widening university access and participation, and its engagement with business, industry and communities. AUT, New Zealand’s fastest growing university, has an enrolment of around 19,000 equivalent full-time students across three campuses – City, North Shore and Manukau.

LINCOLN UNIVERSITY 

Lincoln University is New Zealand’s specialist land-based university. With more than 130 years of offering specialist research-based qualifications in such fields as agricultural science; soil, plant, food and animal science; bioprotection and biosecurity; conservation and ecology; environmental management; and water science and technology, Lincoln University has positioned itself as a key contributor next to the major commercial interests of the New Zealand economy.

The University’s tradition of research excellence has lent itself to a notable international reputation, with but one example of this being the invitation to join the exclusive Euroleague of Life Sciences (ELLS).

MASSEY UNIVERSITY

Massey Univerity has particular strengths in Agriculture, Accounting, Business, Design, Economics, Econometrics and Finance, Education, Food Technology, Nursing, and Veterinary Science. It is New Zealand's largest provider of university distance education.

UNIVERSITY OF AUCKLAND (UOA)

The University of Auckland is New Zealand’s leading university and is the only one ranked among the world’s top 200 universities by the Times Higher Education World Rankings of Universities.  It is also the highest ranked New Zealand university in the QS World University Rankings and the Shanghai Jiao Tong Academic Ranking of World Universities. The University of Auckland has a strong international focus and is the only New Zealand member of Universitas 21, the Worldwide Universities Network (WUN), and the Association of Pacific Rim Universities – international consortia of research-led universities. The country’s largest university, it has a comprehensive range of courses, with research and teaching conducted over eight faculties and two large-scale research institutes.

UNIVERSITY OF CANTERBURY (UOC)

The University of Canterbury is the first QS five-star university in New Zealand. It’s areas of specialisation include Civil and Natural Resources Engineering, Earth and Marine Sciences, Chemistry, Physics and Astronomy, Computer Science and Software Engineering, Forestry, Economics, Education, Law, Psychology, Linguistics, Accounting and Finance, Arts and Humanities, Geography, and Communication and Media Studies.

UNIVERSITY OF OTAGO (UOO)

UO has particular research strengths in Humanities (Anthropology, Education, History,  Law, Philosophy, Theology and Religious Studies), Health Sciences (Clinical Medicine, Dentistry,  Nutrition, Pharmacy, Psychology,) and Sciences (Chemistry,  Physical and  Mathematical Sciences,  Earth  and Ocean Sciences, Plant and Animal Biology, Exercise Science and Technology).

UNIVERSITY OF WAIKATO (UOW)

The University of Waikato has strong specialisations in business, executive education, computer science, social sciences, education, environmental sciences and law, and Maori and indigenous interdisciplinary issues.

VICTORIA UNIVERSITY OF WELLINGTON (VUW)

Victoria University of Wellington has been ranked New Zealand’s top university for research quality. Areas of research strength include humanities, law, science, architecture and design, engineering, education and commerce. The University is committed to generating knowledge with social, economic and environmental impact.
